Rapper MF Doom, known for his signature mask and intricate rhyming, sometimes non-sequitur musical lyrics, died Oct. 31, his wife posted on social media Thursday. He was 49.
The death of MF Doom, whose real name was Daniel Dumile, was announced on his Instagram page by his wife and was confirmed to Rolling Stone by his representative, Richie Abbott.
“The greatest husband, father, teacher, student, business partner, lover and friend I could ever ask for,” Dumile’s wife, Jasmine, wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for all the things you have shown, taught and given to me, our children and our family. Thank you for teaching me how to forgive beings and give another chance, not to be so quick to judge and write off.”
“All u ever needed in hip hop was this record,” Flying Lotus tweeted, featuring a photograph of the album cover to “Madvillainy,” Dumile’s 2004 album with Madlib. “My soul is crushed.”
The rapper, whose metal-masked persona was inspired by Marvel Comics villain Doctor Doom, was born in London but moved to New York City as a child, Variety reported.
He began his musical career as a teenager under the name of Zev Lov X in the hip-hop group KMD, which included his brother, DJ Subroc, Rolling Stone reported.
After his brother’s death in 1993, Dumile left the musical scene for a few years before reemerging at a Manhattan club, performing with a stocking over his face, the magazine reported. Hiding his identity became Dumile’s trademark, and he eventually adopted the signature mask modeled after Doctor Doom.
Dumile released “Operation: Doomsday” in 1999, producing it himself under the pseudonym Metal Fingers. He would go on to record six studio albums, Rolling Stone reported.
“Born Like This,” Dumile’s final album in 2009, helped him break into the album charts for the first time as a solo artist, Variety reported.
